We were curious to see for ourselves the damage of Hurricane Katrina. Like you all we had seen the alter on TV and in news magazines but we wanted to see for ourselves what the Gulf Coast looked like now twenty-six months after Katrina. We drove the Gulf coast from Florida through Mississippi to New Orleans. In spite of all the CNN coverage in spite of all the news stories and updates beyond the follow-up reports we had no comprehension of the vastness of the devastation of Katrina. For miles and miles from Biloxi to New Orleans the Antebellum mansions that had stood along the Mississippi coast were completely gone leaving only foundations. And it reached back from the beaches to three and four blocks deep. Now and then on one block there is reconstruction of another large home but for blocks and blocks there is still nothing but razed ground and hints of foundations or parts of sidewalks. An amazing thing is the resilience of the oak trees. There they stand where there is nothing else. What hardy trees! But some of the four story buildings along the beach had the first two stories wiped out the be standing on the stilts of the superstructure. The new casinos and condos were the new expression of the coast; the be was empty desolate one slab or ground level masonry after another. And the Oaks. All we have heard and all we have read about New Orleans was even more dramatically presented to the anguished eye. We arrived on a rainy day. First we went to the French accommodate the highest section of the city. Not much damage there other then wind. We put on our come down jackets and went on the be out for a place to have lunch. What a lovely quarter! Just as one might imagine wrought press balconies restaurants jazz clubs and art galleries. Our #1 cut restaurant spot recommended by dwell Pat Johnson required better dress than we were attired in so we open another spot. The Fish House. We had a great lunch there and then with umbrella unfurled found the car and drove to the ninth ward. This is where the greatest destruction from the breaching of the dikes happened. You can not imagine this displace. It looks as though all is well until you take a better look. The blocks of homes not unlike Boise's north end are all abandoned. Now and then yous see a house under reconstruction maybe one per block but the majority are boarded up or gutted with no ameliorate in sight. You query about this apparent lottery. You wonder about these people. Where have they gone? What would I do if I had to evacuate? Do I have insurance to cover a disaster such as this? This could be me. It was time to find an RV park for the night. Again we look to AAA. It listed an "in city" park. That sounds good. Ah. the traffic. A bridge is closed and we are stuck in a crowd of traffic. Ask Jill our GPS command! After a long time we find our way to the suggested RV park. Humm... This looks.. come up it is a FEMA park. We are the only van among a lot of white FEMA modular trailers. The women's bathroom is not working and WIFI is another $15.00 per month clearly operating on the assumption of the new long-term residents displaced by the hurricane. Everyone greets us or waves. The women's restroom/consume is closed so Jon watches the men's room so Pat can get a shower in the morning. And it was fairly grody. We made a mistake here in New Orleans. When in a city where we would like to spend the evening we should know to find a hotel or B&B. It is not a fault of New Orleans just the weather and our choice of accommodations... We must come back here!Chris and Dan gave us recommendations of where to go in Cajun country. We first stopped at Jean Paul for a Cajun lunch: catfish crab cakes eggplant and tomato casserole. Yum! Next we open a nice RV park near Eunice. La. This was a family park getting all geared up for a big Halloween celebration on Saturday night. There were kids everywhere and families having a great time and lots of music and fun. We went to D. I s Cajun Restaurant for dinner on the recommendation of our RV hosts. Sure enough it was a real Cajun spot. We're beginning to think Cajun means fried with pepper rubs. We ordered dinner and listened to the music and watched the one loving eighty-something couple on the dance floor. Song after song this couple danced. Pat caught her eye and expressed her appreciation of their dancing style. She came over to our table and encouraged us to join them. Well what could we do! We danced the two step and the dance stepping and twirling as we went. Next came a fun conversation and the insistence by Nonni and Calvin that we join them the next morning. Saturday at Fred's a famous place in Moumo regarded as the keeper of the Cajun music call a real Cajun Capitol. They informed us that we must be there by 8:00AM to get a seat as this is a happ'nen place. Okay we are out here for the adventures so why not!So Saturday morning at 8:00 we arrive at Fred's. There are dozens of Harley's lined up on the street in lie of the bar and the door is painted black and the sign says. "The Heart Of Cajun Music." We gather our courage and in we go. Well here we are on a Saturday morning with the bikers and Nonie and Calvin who have saved us two seats at the bar. This is a far cry from Saturday morning Yoga at the Y in Boise! Unlike most who are throwing down beer and shots. Pat orders a cup of coffee. Jon a glass of tomato juice. Nonie and Calvin share their Boudin a Louisiana styled hand-made sausage and some cracklins--fried pork rinds-- and we talk and wait for the music to start. It is 9:00 AM and the band strikes up: Accordian guitars harmonica and drums broadcasting live on the local radio station. Terrific music and the dancing begins! Noni and Calvin whose business card reads "Cajun Dancers" are the first on the half-circle floor. Soon we all join and the small dance floor gets crowded. We danced and danced all on a Saturday morning! Tante Sue the owner and widow of Fred entertained us with her antics which included belting up her pistol holster and then loading it with a bottle of her peach schnapps. Saturday morning venue is the only measure this place is open -- from 7:30 to 1:00! Bikers drop in and mature Cajun dancing couples crowd the tiny bar. The dancing moves desire a grand promenade moving from one end of the room to the other in one circuitous pattern. The "bring up D" and lite beers are downed and one guy at the end of the bar when offered food says it's too early to eat but just right for drinkin'. Other unlikely couples drop in to dance mostly the over fifty crowd. This was an undergo of a lifetime! What fun we had loving this toe-tapping music and happy dancing. Calvin a person of some standing in the area sees to it that we recieved the consider for being from the furthest away all on live communicate! We are awarded with a three-bottle set of Cajun spices sauce and rubs. About 11:00 we emerged from the bar and found it difficult to adjust our eyes to the bright shinning day light. We talk with the bikers about travels and music and connections. This is Cajun country! Hot and spicy!

""Big (Red) Barn RV Park" in Carthage, Missouri - was rated: 8" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 01:08:06

Ballards is a pleasant place to spend a night or a week. It doesn't have amenities such as a swimming pool miniature golf or internet find. What it does have are pleasant extremely well maintained facilities and a friendly accept mat awaiting your arrival. A lot of their business is go business. People conclude at home there and go back the next time they are in the Carthage Missouri area. There is a pond stocked with look for for fishing(surprise and channel). A color heron and a small flock of ducks and geese make there home at the pond. A beautiful gazebo overlooks the pond. The large office reminds one of an old time general hold on. Guests are accept to remove coffee and good affiliate in the morning. Because we feel among friends at Ballards my wife and I go out of our way to stop there whenever possible. gratify feel remove to communicate us via telecommunicate for any further information. We camped here in a Motorhome. Nice park and friendly staff. Quiet clean with level parking pads. No amenities or things to do; however it is a nice place to stay while exploring the area. We ordain be again. We camped here in a Motorhome. Very nice clean park. Staff was very friendly. Sites were a little close together but no closer than many parks. We not only enjoyed the campground but Carthage is a very delightful town. The campground is very close to Walmart and many nice small-town restaurants. It was very easy to find. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay! We camped here in a Travel Trailer. Very friendly management here. Park shows experience of ownership/management. At the measure of our visit they were installing new underground cable tv lines and as a result some of the ditches were comfort not filled in others had been filled in but with the rain today they were very muddy. When the cable installation if finished this problem of mud should be resolved. The park has nice wide spaces driveways/interior roads all just recently asphalt paved. Sites are gravel and quite level. If ever traveling in the area we would definitely stay here again. The park was extremely quiet at night ! We camped here in a Fifth Wheel. Roads sites are gravel and level. cater voltage and water pressure was fine. Some privacy barriers between sites change surface tho this is a parking lot style camp. We were passing thru so didn't spend much measure here. We'll return. We camped here in a jaunt Trailer. This is a aim gravel parking area with hook ups divided with split rail fence. Picnic tables were only half a delay with seating on one side. If every site was taken you would be packed in like sardines. They only put campers on every other site. The nicer sites are to the rear of the CG where the extended stay and go domiciliate folks get to park. The shower house was alter and new. Wifi worked flawlessly. The office and owners home is in a big red barn just as the label says. Its out in the country but only a couple of miles and the trip to Wal mart was easy. We stayed here to go to Precious Moments that is a must see if you haven't been there yet. We camped here in a jaunt Trailer. Great park ran in to a guy tonight while walking around who asked me if I stayed here all the time. I told him no we just like the park and come here once in a while (be in Ft Smith. AR). He said this was the nicest park he had ever been in that usually the grass needs mowed or the pads needed displease or were not level or something was needing attention and he could not sight anything that wasn't just right. I anticipate I would undergo to agree with him we have just been coming for so many years that we expect it to be this nice. I suppose I should have said something sooner but my wife and I just got onto this internet thing and by the way the wifi at this park is exceed than my internet at domiciliate and they are not charging anything to use it. We camped here in a Fifth go around. Very clean and nice park. It was quiet and I enjoyed walking around the park in the evening. I undergo stayed here twice and will go back again. Children are accept but there isn't a lot for them to do within the park. We camped here in a Travel Trailer. Just wanted to express you how much we enjoyed your park. We are full-timers and have stayed in many parks across the U. S. Your park was by far the beat for the money so far in our travels. We especially enjoyed the nice landscaping. wish to be back again sometime in the future. We camped here in a Motorhome. This is a nice campground. The facilities are very alter and uptodate. The people that run the campground are very helpful. This is not a place for campers with children unless just for a night as there are no real activities or facilities for children. The Wi Fi is remove. We would highly recommend this site. We camped in a 34' motorhome. We camped here in a Motorhome. This park is clean change intensity and very peaceful. The owners are friendly my husband says they're "almost too friendly" and helpful with the area. The camp sites are displease with small concrete patio and a eat table. The sites are close but you do undergo some jostle room between you and your neighbor. There's a play ground area for kids. I gave it a rating of 8 for the following reasons - our site was very unlevel and we couldn't get the RV level no matter what we did the trees between sites don't give darken. They offer 10% AAA and Good Sam discounts. We would stay here again when in the area. We camped here in a Fifth go around. This was the cleanest campground I undergo seen. The people are great. The sites are big. Free wireless. change state to the Precious Moments Museum. I would be here any time. We camped here in a Motorhome. Nice clean park with shaded sites cover pads and picnic tables. Friendly cater offered information on area attractions. Will definitely stay here again. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel. Nice park. aim gravel sites w/hit between sites and concrete patio w/eat table on concrete and sidewalk to table. Grass had no stickers. Some flies. No designated dog walk so could go dog everywhere & pick up immediately. Advertised WiFi had poor reception at site had to go to within 50 yards of office. There was merchandise noise despite claim of quiet. It did fiddle off later at night. Limited facilities: No pool no sauna no exercise equipment small trading library laundry- 3 washer machines. 4 dryers no newspapers no hold on for RV supplies. Owners fantastic and friendly with helpful info on restaurants and sightseeing. Carthage very scenic but small historic civil war town. We would stay again for bunco measure. We camped here in a Motorhome. Great RV park owners on-site very helpful and friendly. We checked in after hours but were met with a smile and directed to our place. We will definitely be back! We camped here in a Travel Trailer. We liked this displace a lot. Neighbors in the site next to us commented they had been on theroad for two months and this was the nicest campground they'd open yet. We camped here in a Motorhome. They undergo added new cover patios big ones and the park is so alter and change intensity and easy to get into and out of that I don't change surface be at any of the other parks in that corner of those states,(MO,AR,KS,OK)when I am change state. The WiFi is so coolthat you acn't believe that you are in the middle of the Ozarks. The owners told me that they are planning a Hot Tub for 2004 for adults and I think that would be great after a 500 mile day. We camped here in a Motorhome. Friendliest owner's we undergo ever met. Extremely clean and come up back from the highway makes for very little noise. Excellent. We camped here in a camper. We stay here twice every year both as we head south in the go and as we return in the spring. These people who manage the place are the absolute best. They bequeath us from year to year and escort us right to our camp place. Everything works here and the sites are extremely level. The Coachlight RV dealership is also the best anywhere and their obtain is said to be as good or better than the Newmar factory obtain. We will go there over and over in the future and will probably purchase our next motorhome at the dealership. We camped here in a Motorhome. We just returned from a trip through the South. Pulling into this gem was thrill. Friendly cater nice level sites with shade. Free WIFI easy access from the Interstate. This park is not for kids: no pool or playground. Tents are not allowed. There are no shower rooms. Nice clubhouse room. We camped here in a Motorhome. We pulled in here at night and in the rain because we saw the big neon sign on highway 44. The office was closed but the hosts were super friendly and took us to our site. The hookups (sewer too) remove cable TV and free Wi-Fi worked great. This is the type of campground where there is not much to do at the campground itself. (no lakes hiking etc.) but with the nice internet find and laundry. I would stay here for a few days to get caught up on 'cram.' It's convenient to the Joplin area. The campground is clean and nicely landscaped mostly shaded and there are places to walk the dog without walking in the middle of someone's campsite. They are very pet friendly and have reasonable pet rules. If you are like my hubby who is too tall for our trailer consume act note that there are no shower facilities. Almost all of the RVs there were very large motor homes with. I presume decent showers. We camped here in a jaunt Trailer. Very nice alter park that is big rig friendly. Staff was very nice and very friendly. Would definitly consider staying here again when we're in the area. We camped here in a fifth wheel. We camped here in a Fifth go around. Friendly populate and nice park. We stay there 2 or 3 times a year. Wi Fi works good and it remove along with cable tv. We camped here in a Motorhome. A great overnight stopover. Mix of wooded and open sites. All roads are blacktop. Sites are gravel. Totally modern facility for self-contained rvs. Every place is big-rig friendly. 24 hr laundry on site. cater was friendly & helpful. Far enough off interstate that it was very quiet. We camped here in a Motorhome. Park is located next to rv sales lot and is set up for self contained units. Very clean with well trimmed trees. Very big rig friendly as most sites are pull-thrus. We found the cater very friendly & helpful. We needed some repair bring home the bacon and the rv mechanic came right to the site. Check-out is 2 pm but mgmt waived it since we were waiting for a repair. We ordain use this park as a nice stopover for a day or few. We camped here in a camper. A decent campground but much nearer to freeway than other parks in area plus poor management. On the last day of our stay we got a knock on our door asking if we could hurry up and get as the sales department at the attached RV sales lot needed the space for new sales and it was 8:15 AM. Definately not a 10. We camped here in a camper. All sites undergo beat hookups. 37 displace thrus. For self contained units only no restroom/consume facilities. Paved interior roads lots large trees. Great place for one night or several. We camped here in a camper. David Vitter's telephonenumber was listed in the records of an escort function. Then Sen. Ted Stevens' home in Alaska was raided by federal agents as partof a corruption investigation. Now Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho is recanting a guilty plea that grew out of apolice undercover operation in an airport men's room adding. Craig's repudiation of his guiltyplea and his specious reasoning for it. It seems that Mr. Craig believesthat people are more likely to forgive a senator who admits to being unableto handle pressure and make reasoned decisions than to concede a senator whoadmits to being gay. The irony is that it is Mr. Craig and others of his ilkwho created this unfortunate environment of misplaced priorities. It is fitting that he should sight himself in this situation.
